The cards published by The Fundamental Note feature monochromatic graphic designs. To create a design, I use a two-layer masking film called Rubylith. The process entails outlining areas in the soft, light-resistant red layer with a knife and peeling them away, exposing the clear polyester backing. The cut film is scanned, the resulting pdf is sized, I choose the color, and the printer takes it from there. The art rests in imagining and creating the images; modern printing technology has curbed once-prohibitive production costs.
